Yay, Capitalism: ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ Premieres This November
It’s finally time. If celebrity Squid Game parties weren’t your vibe (sorry, Chrissy Teigen) and you were hoping for something more conspicuously tone-deaf, Netflix has the answer. The groundbreaking smash series Squid Game reality competition, Squid Game: The Challenge, finally has a premiere date, hitting the streamer on November 22, 2023.
Check out the trailer below:
The competition series will run for 10 episodes and pit 456 players against one another for what is reportedly the largest cash prize in reality television history. A whopping $4.56 million is up for grabs, and no doubt, 456 players will fight tooth and nail to get it. That’s a lot, but it still falls short of the estimated $38 million cash prize from the source show itself.
Per Netflix, Squid Game: The Challenge sees “456 real players enter the competition show in pursuit of a life-changing reward of USD $4.56 million. As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show—plus surprising new additions—their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.”
Squid Game: The Challenge hails from Studio Lambert and The Garden. Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary series Brandon Riegg is quoted as saying, “Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”
In 2021, we reported on a real-life iteration of the game (minus the death) in Abu Dhabi. Why is the world so obsessed with rendering a dystopian game that pits poor folk against one another real? Couldn’t tell ya, but it’s happening, and with Squid Game Season 2 officially announced, it will probably continue to happen. Fun times.
