Bidding Farewell to the ‘Post Mortem with Mick Garris’ Podcast

Horror fans everywhere know his name: filmmaker, author, and Dread Central podcaster Mick Garris has earned a massive following with his novels, frightening filmography, and his premiere interview podcast Post Mortem with Mick Garris. One of the most popular horror-focused pods to ever emerge, Garris—maybe best known for his Stephen King adaptations and creating the Masters Of Horror television series—has picked the brains of some of the greatest filmmakers and genre creators of all time. From Tom Savini to Joe Dante, Bruce Campbell to John Carpenter, and countless others, Post Mortem has given fans a chilling and intimate view behind the curtain of all things horror.

Our hearts are heavy to announce that after seven years, Post Mortem with Mick Garris will be closing its morgue drawers by the end of 2023. Mick made the announcement himself on today’s very special episode featuring the legendary John Carpenter. Together they discuss 45 years of Halloween‘s legacy. But there’s no imminent need to panic. Garris will continue the podcast through the end of 2023 with new guests and surprises to share along the way.

“After seven years of the podcast that has become such an important part of my life, we are writing our own postmortem of the show. I have truly loved and learned from every single conversation that we’ve had on the show. So after much agonizing, I’ve decided to put a stake through the heart of our show before its health declines,” says Garris of the final season.

Concluding, he shares these thoughts with the Dread Central audience: “All of the episodes will remain available online for time immemorial, but we will not be doing new shows after year’s end. Thanks so much for all the love and kind words over these amazing seven years. And thanks to you at Dread for all the support, as well. Cheers, Mick.”

Producer and on-air personality Joe Russo has also shared some words of wisdom on the autopsy of Post Mortem. Russo is a writer, filmmaker, and Dread Podcaster who recently helped lead the charge of the WGA’s demand for a fair deal during this year’s arduous and critical strike. His latest film, Soul Mates, is out now.

“I never thought that soft-pitching a Podcast One executive at a friend’s housewarming party would change the next seven years of my life, but that chance encounter led to one of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career, Post Mortem with Mick Garris,” shares Russo.

He continues by adding,

“Watching the podcast grow and evolve as it moved from legendary-horror-brand-to-legendary-horror-brand, Blumhouse, Fangoria, and our longest-running home, Dread Central—and culminating in our 2023 Podcast of the Year Rondo Award—couldn’t have been a more satisfying journey. We’ve worked with amazing people all along the way and I couldn’t have asked for a better production team than the one we’re ending our run with.

I’ve gotten to meet amazing creatives over the years—many of them my heroes—but, becoming part of the show as Mick’s AMA co-host deepened my relationship with the people that mattered the most to Post Mortem: our fans. It’s been a privilege and an honor to produce for Mick, and it’s an opportunity I will forever be grateful for.”

Episode 268: Mind Body Spirit Filmmkers Alex Henes and Matt Merenda and The Brave Little Toaster (1987)
This week we're joined by Alex Henes and Matt Merenda, the filmmakers behind the yoga-horror found footage film Mind Body Spirit, which is available on demand and streaming on Shudder and AMC+. We chat about Sarah J. Bartholomew's fantastic performance, the script and more before diving into their childhoods and their very different reactions to horror as a kid. Then we chat about The Brave Little Toaster and how it destroyed all four of our childhoods. Anthropomorphic appliances, self-cannibalism, religion...this movie has it all and we laugh our way through describing just how messed up it actually is.
