While at Comic-Con, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat exclusively with Daniel Knauf about his upcoming NBC series “Dracula,” which he’s overseeing as Executive Producer.
“Dracula” will take a bite out of network TV on October 25th and stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the iconic vampire, who has just arrived in London (circa the late 1800’s) posing as an American entrepreneur looking to bring “light” to his new community (or maybe just something far more sinister instead). “Dracula” also stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Thomas Kretschmann, Katie McGrath and Jessica De Gouw.
During our time with Knauf (“Carnivale,” “Spartacus: War of the Damned”), we spoke to him about what fans can expect from this new spin on Bram Stoker’s classic characters, his thoughts on why Rhys Meyers is the perfect bloodsucker and more on what they’re able to get away with on network television.
Knauf also gave us the lowdown on some of the story details for the first season of “Dracula” (be forewarned the interview has MINOR SPOILERS) and looked back at “Carnivale,” arguably one of the greatest cable series from the last 10 years (in this writer’s humble opinion at least).
Check out our exclusive video interview with Knauf below, and look for more on “Dracula” closer to its debut this fall!
Synopsis:
Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (“The Tudors”) stars in this provocative new one-hour drama as one of the world’s most iconic characters. It’s the late 19th century, and the mysterious Dracula has arrived in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. He’s especially interested in the new technology of electricity, which promises to brighten the night – useful for someone who avoids the sun. But he has another reason for his travels: He hopes to take revenge on those who cursed him with immortality centuries earlier. Everything seems to be going according to plan… until he becomes infatuated with a woman who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.
From the producers of the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning hit “Downton Abbey” comes “Dracula,” a twisted, sophisticated, and sexy take on Bram Stoker’s classic novel, proving that some stories never die.
Along with Meyers as Dracula/Alexander Grayson/Vlad Tepes, the other cast members include Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Jonathan Harker, Jessica De Gouw as Mina Murray/Ilona, Thomas Kretschmann as Abraham Van Helsing, Katie McGrath as Lucy Westenra, Nonso Anozie as R.M. Renfield, Victoria Smurfit as Lady Jayne Wetherby, Ben Miles as Mr. Browning, and Robert Bathurst as Lord Thomas Davenport.
The 10-episode series is paired with “Grimm” on Friday nights and will premiere at 10PM on October 25th.
