TCA Summer 2013 Press Tour: More Details on American Horror Story: Coven CharactersToday was FX’s turn to shine for the Television Critics Association, and part of their presentation included some info on the characters we’ll see in “American Horror Story: Coven.” Read on for the details!

Per Deadline, Kathy Bates will play Louisiana-born socialite and serial killer Marie Delphine LaLaurie, a big wheel in New Orleans until a fire broke out in her house in 1834 and people responding to help discovered bound and tortured slaves inside. Angela Bassett, meanwhile, will play Marie Laveau, a Louisiana Creole and Voodoo priestess who also lived in New Orleans in the 19th century.

As for returning co-stars Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson, the former will play a witch named Fiona while the latter will play her daughter, Cordelia. If the name Cordelia is familiar, then thank your high school English teacher – it’s based on King Lear’s daughter who winds up dead after her father goes mad, said “AHS” executive producer Tim Minear.

Minear, who appeared on stage with Lange, Paulson, Bates, and Bassett, described his “Coven” cast as a “murders’ row of actresses” and said this year’s themes are “oppression of minorities and minority groups going after each other and doing the work of the larger culture.” He also suggested a strong “feminist theme” and a higher “fun quotient,” which “might be a little more welcoming to an audience” than last season.

TV Guide provided a bit more info from Lange: “…some of us play witches, some play historical characters… We move back and forth in time so it encompasses a lot of different stories.” She and the other women insisted that even they don’t know much about their characters. “It’s been a huge adjustment to work this way without knowing for sure or knowing at all who the character is,” Lange added. “It allows you to work very much on the fly. The great thing about this entire cast is that you have to be brave. You just have to jump in and do it and not be cautious because you’ve got 12 episodes to create this character.”

Filming just began recently, and “American Horror Story: Coven” is set to return in October on FX. For more info visit the show’s Facebook page along with “American Horror Story” on FX.
