Forgotten Stephen King Chiller Is Finally Free To Stream [Watch]

Stephen King

We over here at Dread Central are massive Stephen King fans and we’re always prowling through the corners of the internet to find out what’s streaming and where. Today, fans of forgotten Stephen King gems are in luck. Available to stream for free on Tubi, fans can check out the underrated chiller The Dark Half now.

Per Tubi: A precocious writer undergoes a grotesque operation which reveals a twin in his brain. He begins a double writing life, using his real name on “art” novels and using a pseudonym for his disreputable best-sellers. When the pseudonym discovers he is to be eradicated by public acknowledgment, he goes on a murderous rampage–leaving all of the evidence pointed at the writer.

George A. Romero wrote and directed the adaptation of Stephen King’s 1989 novel of the same name. The Dark Half stars Timothy Hutton, Amy Madigan, and Michael Rooker. It’s certainly one of King’s strangest works, and 2021’s Malignant owes a great deal of debt to King’s perverse tale of evil twins run amok. If you’re not Arnold Schwarzenegger or Danny DeVito, your twin is probably going to want to kill you.

The Dark Half recently turned 30 this year, making this as good a time as any to commemorate one of his stranger offerings. George A. Romero brings his trademark style to the proceedings, and in a dual role, Hutton is clearly having a blast.

While it’s never exactly scary, it’s plenty odd, and there’s enough morbid oddness to warrant a watch. Despite that, The Dark Half was a critical and commercial failure when first released, though like a lot of King works, the reception has warmed some since then.
