Were you truly a creepy kid if you did not have a few lesser-known Stephen King movies in your back pocket? Sure, everyone knows the popular movie based on bestselling novels. However, some of us occasionally had cable access and knew the good stuff was off the beaten path. So, I am delighted that this all-but-forgotten title has resurfaced and is streaming for free. I was beginning to think Sometimes They Come Back was a really inspired fever dream I had in my youth, but it’s real! Let me tell you about the movie I spent hours of my childhood studying while the rest of you were pretending Disney ever gave you anything.

In the film,

High school teacher Jim Norman (Tim Matheson) reluctantly returns to his hometown with his wife (Brooke Adams) to pursue a job. Jim is haunted by the childhood memory of his brother being murdered by a group of teenagers, who were then struck by a train before they could kill him, too. To Jim’s horror, he finds that the teenagers have returned to town as they appeared before they died, and are transferring into his class. When his students start dying off, Jim becomes the prime suspect.

Sometimes They Come Back was directed by Tom McLoughlin. It was adapted for the screen by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal. It is based on a Stephen King short story of the same name. The movie stars Tim Matheson, Brooke Adams, and Robert Rusler.

I watched the movie often as a kid, who was obsessed with Stephen King. However, it never clicked that the weird editing choices were because it was originally a TV movie that aired on CBS when I was barely a fetus. So, I clearly need to rewatch and reevaluate one of my childhood default watches now that I have that information.

Are you planning to rewatch Sometimes They Come Back while it is streaming for free this month? Are you thinking about watching the whole trilogy? Because I am, and we should start a Twitter support group. Find me at @misssharai.
