The Final ‘Stranger Things’ Season Starts Filming in January!

Stranger Things

While audiences are eating up the doomsday thriller Leave the World Behind on Netflix, the streamer is preparing for another go-round at world-ending events with the announcement that Stranger Things Season 5, the final season for the long-running Netflix hit, is set to begin production in January. Check out a trailer for Season 4 below as a refresher:

While production was ready to start earlier this year, Deadline reports both the SAG-AFTRA Strike and WGA strike delayed production, with the streamer now eying a January 8 start date. Fans can expect the final season to be bigger than ever, with executive producer and director Shawn Levy saying in September, “It’s major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series. Stranger Things 5 is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see.”

Additionally, showrunner Matt Duffer remarked to Deadline last year, “Characters are already going to be in action, they’re already going to have a goal and a drive, and I think that’s going to carve out at least a couple hours and make this season feel really different.”

For context, the last season of Stranger Things ended with our globe-trotting main cast together again, only for Will (Noah Schnapp) to sense Vecna’s presence again as the Upside Down slowly begins to take over Hawkins. The previous seasons amped up the horror elements considerably, eschewing some of the tired nostalgia of the early seasons for a grittier, more mature take on both the characters and the world-ending stakes they continue to encounter.

With the death of breakout character Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) in the finale, Season 5 will no doubt continue to ramp up the stakes as it ties almost a decade of storytelling together. Whether it all comes together remains to be seen, though we’re likely looking at a 2025 release for the final bow at this point, so we’ll know soon enough.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Stranger Things 5 on Netflix, or is it too little, too late? Do you think the Upside Down or digital de-ageing of its now-adult cast will be scarier? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
