The #1 Movie On Netflix Is A Shocking Thriller Dividing Audiences
If you want to know where the last generation’s movie stars are, just look at Netflix. For as much as the streamer gets flack for canceling good shows, failing to pay its writers, or endeavoring to, uh, own its background actors’ likeness into perpetuity, the broad framework at least has the right idea, especially in the present cinematic landscape.
In an era of IP filmmaking and the erosion of the movie star into what amounts to a repository for corporate branding and cinematic universes, it’s always nice to see a movie made by adults, for adults, starring some of the most recognizable A-listers around. It’s no wonder Leave the World Behind is presently the Number 1 movie on Netflix.
Per Netflix: A family’s getaway to a luxurious rental home takes an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices – and two strangers appear at their door.
The Netflix thriller stars Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Bacon, and Mahershala Ali among a surfeit of talented performers in supporting roles. Plus, it was produced by both Barack and Michelle Obama as part of their 2018 deal with the streamer to produce series and movies. Adapted from the 2020 Rumaan Alam novel of the same name, Leave the World Behind is a chilling, cataclysmic nightmare.
Audiences seem to agree, accounting for the movie’s placement on the Netflix charts and the fervent online conversation around its performances, its ending, and some of its more apocalyptic set pieces. Check out what fans have been saying below:
Some fans are loving how bonkers the entire affair is, while others are taking umbrage with the ending. There’s also an entirely different, third vein of the Leave the World Behind discourse online (it involves predictive programming), but the less said about that, the better.
