Guillermo del Toro Loves This 2023 Thriller: “A really exciting and excited filmmaking piece”
Beloved filmmaker and cinephile Guillermo del Toro has finally watched one of my favorite movies of the year. Not only did he enjoy the film, but he also had a ton of compliments on the extravagant affair. In a surprising turn of events, del Toro has joined the ranks of the Saltburn hive.
The Academy Award-winning filmmaker took to Twitter to weigh in on fellow Oscar-winning director Emerald Fennell’s newest outing. Del Toro wrote, “[I]t was a skillful, audacious and obsessive grotesquerie- a Steadman, a Hogarth- a state of being”.

If you somehow missed the buzz around Saltburn, I am happy to share my notes on this movie that has put me on the same bandwagon as Guillermo del Toro.
In the film,
“Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.”
Saltburn was written and directed by Emerald Fennell. The film stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, Archie Madekwe, and Carey Mulligan.
I caught Saltburn at the BFI London Film Festival a few weeks ago when it quickly became my new personality. In my review, I wrote:
“Emerald Fennell has crafted an absurdly funny, dangerous, seductive world where everyone is more than they seem. Saltburn is everything we assumed it would be but also somehow more than we ever could’ve dreamed. It defies expectations and refuses to settle for a simple indictment of the rich because that would be too easy.“
It has been a very divisive film on the Twitter streets, so I am excited to see what happens when it hits Prime Video this week. People who missed it in theaters due to inaccessibility or discomfort with crowds during a pandemic will finally experience it in time for the holidays.
