The #1 Documentary On Max Is Disturbing Viewers: “My Jaw Was On The Ground”

This gripping documentary still has the internet in a chokehold. Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God came into our lives last month, and we have been screaming ever since. This explains why it has claimed the #1 on the Max (formerly HBO Max) charts for another week. Allow me to assist you in trying to unpack this unbelievable but true story.

“Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God chronicles the life and death of Amy Carlson, also known as Mother God, a self-proclaimed spiritual savior who built a cult through her online manifestos and live-streaming sessions. As Amy’s health declined, her followers believed her death would lead to her evacuation by UFO and salvation for humanity. Told through the eyes of Amy’s devotees and constructed from the cult’s archival footage, the three-part docuseries captures the perils of internet proselytizing and a conspiracy-driven faith.”

Twitter is understandably confused and alarmed by the story of Amy Carlson. In a year of documentaries centering on religious cults, Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God stands out for many reasons. However, the main one is that her followers sincerely believed her death would trigger an alien evacuation to save humanity.

The three-part docuseries was directed by Hannah Olson (The Last Cruise and Baby God). Each episode is almost an hour long, which makes it a quick binge. It debuted on November 13 on Max.
