birth/rebirth

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is having a moment right now, with adaptations like Poor Things and The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster grabbing horror fans’ attention. One of the best recent adaptations is Laura Moss‘s Birth/Rebirth, an all-female twist on the well-known gothic tale.

Read the full synopsis:

Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction. She also has an obsession — the reanimation of the dead. Celie (Judy Reyes) is a maternity nurse who has built her life around her bouncy, chatterbox six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister). When one tragic night, Lila suddenly falls ill and dies, the two women’s worlds crash into each other. They embark on a dark path of no return where they will be forced to confront how far they are willing to go to protect what they hold most dear.

Dread Central’s editor-in-chief Mary Beth McAndrews reviewed Birth/Rebirth at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and said,

The performances from Ireland and Reyes truly take the script to another level. That’s not to say Moss and O’Brien’s script isn’t gorgeous. It’s well-paced and manages to dodge and weave out of falling into predictability due to audience familiarity with the source material. Yet Ireland and Reyes take that and make this not only a horror movie, but a deeply sad tale about desperately trying to reconnect with the dead.

Birth/Rebirth is streaming now on Shudder and will be available in the UK on January 22, 2024.
