Exclusive: Declan O'Brien To Take a Joy Ride 3Paul Walker may be gearing up for production on Fast & Furious 7, but back in 2001 he broke speed limits as the lead in the hugely underrated feature horror-actioner Joy Ride. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is now primed to deliver a third installment in that franchise.

We caught up with filmmaker Declan O’Brien (pictured) to get the supercharged details on Joy Ride 3.

O’Brien, whose previous horror entries include the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment features Wrong Turn 3, Wrong Turn 4 and Wrong Turn 5 (as well as Syfy’s Sharktopus), spoke with us this morning from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, regarding Joy Ride 3, which he’ll direct this September from his own script.

“I really enjoyed the original Joy Ride and its sequel,” offered O’Brien. “It brought us the iconic character of ‘Rusty Nail’ and his menacing Big Black Semi. The truck is very much a character itself in my film. Killer trucks have a long history in cinema, one of them being Spielberg’s Duel, and I enjoyed exploring this whole horror sub-genre’s mixture of blood and oil.”

Querying O’Brien as to the identity of the Kim Todd-produced third entry in the franchise (reboot, sequel, etc.), O’Brien stated, “Joy Ride 3 is a continuation of the series, and it refers directly back to the first film in some interesting ways. It’s not overly referential, but there are some good tidbits for ‘Rusty’ fans.”

Known for delivering grisly cinematic murders (as evidenced in his trio of Wrong Turn films), O’Brien riffed on what audiences should expect in Joy Ride 3.

“Yes, you’re going to get a whole new platter of different and inventive kills,” the filmmaker stated. “All of the new kills are automotive related, and I guarantee some of them – hell all of them – you’ve never seen on film before!”

While there’s no word on the flick’s cast as of yet, Dread Central will be in Canada shortly to bring you exclusive updates from the set on this film and more. In the meantime, check out the official synopsis below.

Synopsis
Rusty Nail is back on the road again looking to punish injustice at every turn — and this time it’s with a group of hothead twenty-somethings on their way to the Road Rally 1000. As they drive through a desolate shortcut on the way to the race, an encounter with Rusty turns sour, and soon he is tracking, teasing, and torturing them until the end of the road.
