Former James Bond Headed to Showtime’s Penny Dreadful

Timothy Dalton Penny DreadfulSome quick casting news has come in for Showtime’s new 8-episode series “Penny Dreadful.” Timothy Dalton has been cast in the Sam Mendes-John Logan drama to play “Sir Malcom,” a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest.

Dalton joins the previously announced Josh Hartnett and Eva Green. Hartnett will play the role of “Ethan Chandler,” a charming American who finds himself trapped in the darkest corners of Victorian London, while Green will play “Vanessa Ives,” a seductive and formidable beauty full of secrets and danger. Juan Antonio Bayona will helm the first two episodes of the series.

“Penny Dreadful” is created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call the Midwife). Bayona is an acclaimed and award-winning director, best known for his work on the hugely successful 2007 horror film The Orphanage and the 2012 Oscar contender The Impossible.

“Penny Dreadful” will begin filming in October and premiere on Showtime in 2014. Look for lots more soon!

Synopsis:
In “Penny Dreadful” some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.
