Next Frictional Game Announced as Amnesia: Rebirth

Oh thank God. I don’t think I had another “teasers” article in me. For the last couple of months, Frictional has been being a coy little minx about what their next title is. Fans originally speculated it was SOMA 2, a rumor which I deftly squashed with my 11th dimension galaxy brain. Turns out we are getting a sequel. Just to their other game. No, not Penumbra. That other one. The one with the mouth monsters and the wobbly camera. It’s in the title! Amnesia: Rebirth.

This will be the first time that Frictional Games has revisited the franchise since 2010’s Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Though this is the second sequel, 2013’s Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs was developed by The Chinese Room. A landmark horror title, many credit Amnesia: The Dark Descent with inventing the physics based hide-and-seek gameplay that has come to dominate a large portion of the horror genre. Amnesia: Rebirth will put you in the shoes of Tasi Trianon. Awakening in the middle of the Algerian desert, it’s up to you to piece together Tasi’s past and uncover dark secrets. Hopefully, it doesn’t turn out that she’s a robot the whole time.

While much of Amnesia: Rebirth is still shrouded in mystery, there are a few details. The Official Press Release contains this cryptic message: “You can’t let out a breath. The creature is only inches away. Its sole purpose – to feed off your terror. And so you crouch in the dark, trying to stop the fear rising, trying to silence what lies within you.” In addition, the Steam store page has these details about the gameplay:

Time is against you. Step into Tasi’s shoes and guide her through her personal terror and pain. While you struggle to make your way through a desolate landscape, you must also struggle with your own hopes, fears, and bitter regrets. And still you must continue, step by step, knowing that if you fail you will lose everything.

  • First-person narrative horror experience
  • Explore environments and uncover their histories.
  • Overcome puzzles that stand in your way.
  • Carefully manage your limited resources, both physical and mental.
  • Encounter horrific creatures and use your wits and understanding of the world to escape them.

At present, the only release window we have for Amnesia: Rebirth is Autumn 2020. The press release also states that it is only slated for PC and PS4. So Xbox and Switch gamers might have to sit this one out. If you want to know more, click the link here to check out the Amnesia: Rebirth Steam store page.
