Deadly Premonition 2 Brings The Peak Of Horror Weirdness To Switch July 10th

I can’t imagine how confusing it must be for outsiders to look in on the Deadly Premonition fandom. Looking at any single screenshot, cutscene, segment of gameplay, and you’re likely to be appalled by… just about everything. Like a cursed videotape, you can’t get the intended effect unless you watch the whole thing. And once you do, it changes you. Deadly Premonition is both revered and reviled for the ways it makes every aspect as foreign and uncomfortable as possible. If a single piece were missing, I’d be calling it an unfinished mess. But when all those disjointed pieces are fuesed together into a mosaic of the bizarre, it’s nothing short of perfection.

Fans were obviously excited, if not a bit surprised when Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise was announced. Aside from the controversial critical takes, the game doesn’t really end in a way that screams for an obvious sequel. On top of all that, Deadly Premonition 2 was announced as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, a console not immediately associated with a bevy of exclusive horror titles. Still, it wouldn’t be Deadly Premonition 2 if it didn’t confound us in every way possible. And keeping to that core principle of disassociated strangeness, the trailer above looks like someone was trying to make the intro to James Bond vs. Sadako.

While the trailer doesn’t show us much (though I’m sure that won’t stop people picking through it for clues), the press release today gave us far more details on the upcoming Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise. From the Official Press Release:

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise is a sequel to Deadly Premonition that takes place in present-day Boston. Through unique storytelling, venture back in time to Le Carré and uncover the mysteries buried within the once peaceful town. Serving as both a sequel and prequel to the original Deadly Premonition, follow Agents Davis and Jones as they begin a new investigation into the Le Carré serial murders. Through the memories of a former FBI agent, go back in time to Le Carré and step into the role of Special Agent York to begin unraveling the mystery.

  • Return as FBI Special Agent York and experience a brand-new murder mystery!
  • Both a prequel and a sequel: A historic investigation to uncover the murder mystery in Le Carré
  • An open-ended adventure: Travel around the town of Le Carré by foot or skateboard
  • Mini-games: Bowling, Bayou Ride, Skateboard Challenge, and more
  • Customization: Customize your character and upgrade your skateboard for improved speed and landing more difficult tricks

I can’t tell you if Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise is going to be “good.” But it will be incredible. It’s coming July 10th to the Nintendo Switch for $50. No self-respecting horror lover should miss it. And even the ones that don’t respect themselves should give it a shot.

If you want to hear more of our opinions on the game, we somehow got Jim Sterling to come on our podcast and talk about it months ago.
