Silent Hill’s Legendary Composer Akira Yamaoka Teams Up With Bloober Team For Supernatural Psychological Horror The Medium

The surprise announcements sure were piled high today. After announcing Observer: System Redux just a couple weeks ago, many of us assumed a whole new IP from the team was a ways off. But for today’s Microsoft 20/20 event, the Polish developer has once again set the horror gaming world ablaze with the announcement of their newest title: The Medium. This announcement trailer shows the premise of this new psychological horror game, which follows a psychic medium, who lives simultaneously in the spirit world as well as the real one. And this spirit world looks horrific. The trailer shows a nightmarish scene that looks like something straight out of a Zdzisław Beksiński painting. As for the non-spirit world, the scenery in this trailer (as well as the real-life location of Bloober Team) suggests that this game takes place in Eastern Europe.

Here’s some more details on what to expect from the Official Press Release:

Launching on Xbox Series X and PC in the 2020 Holiday season, The Medium is a tension-fueled, psychological horror game built around a central motif: how your perspective changes your perception. Players will find themselves in the body of Marianne, a medium hounded by visions, living and interacting across two worlds: the real, and the spirit world. Nothing is what it seems, everything has another side. As a medium with access to both worlds, you have a wider perspective and can see more clearly that there’s no one simple truth to what others perceive.

“Every one of our games has a central theme that drives its creative and technological design. In The Medium, we focus on perspective and perception. When you change your point of view, you discover that things are more complicated and nuanced than you initially thought” – said Piotr Babieno, CEO at Bloober Team. “The Medium is our most ambitious game ever and we can’t wait to show you how we’re translating this vision into a psychological horror.”

The Trailer shows some pretty impressive graphics. To give you an idea of how it will look graphically, it will only be available on PC and Xbox Series X. But the real sell for The Medium is the soundtrack. The Medium features what Bloober Team calls a “dual” soundtrack, one for the real world and one for the spirit world. The soundtrack is being composed by Akira Yamaoka, who created the legendary Silent Hill soundtrack. I mean just listen to the music in the trailer. Incredible. More on that, also from the Press Release:

“The inclusion of the legendary Akira Yamaoka – best known for his work on the Silent Hill franchise – is a dream come true. We’ve been inspired by many of the previous games he has worked on and are thrilled to bring a new one to life with The Medium.”

Today was the announcement, so there really isn’t a whole lot of information about the game right now. The Medium is scheduled for release Q4 of 2020. For more information, you can check out the official website of the game here
