Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! In this series, we’re going to pick a new game every day from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of. No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!
Fresh off the boat on itch.io is Dream of Darkness. Or rather, the Dream of Darkness prototype. This horror game is a visual novel that mixes historical fiction and cosmic horror. This current build is mostly to give you an idea of what to expect, as it uses hand drawn concept art and is subject to change.
Dream of Darkness takes place in the 16th century. You are Antón de Alaminos, Spanish explorer who has arrived in South America. Coming upon the Aztec Empire, “Antón slowly becomes aware that something ancient, something evil, is about to awaken… Through this journey, you’ll face many obstacles and eldritch horrors that will test the very limits of your sanity.”
Dream of Darkness is still very much in early production, though what we see now is certainly cool. I almost appreciate the somewhat unpolished sketches, as it gives the artwork a more authentic feel. I would encourage them to keep it, or at least have an alternative game mode where it can be enabled.
The Dream of Darkness developers are looking for community opinions, and “the final version of the game will be shaped by YOUR feedback, so be sure to let us know what you think.” You can try the prototype on itch.io for $3, which can be found here. And, you can get exclusive access to free prototype builds and other content by subscribing to their newsletter, which can be found on their website here.
