Ultra-Indie Daily Dose: Six Shooter Will Have You Fan That Horror, Cowboy

Hello, you glorious gluttons for all things indie horror! Are you just starving for the newest of the new, the most unknownest of the unknown? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! In this series, we’re going to pick a new game every day from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of. No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!

One routinely unrealistic aspect of shooters is how fast the reloads are. Sure, for a magazine based gun, it’s not gonna take that long. But for something that takes one bullet at a time, like a pump shotgun, lever-action rifle, or a revolver, god help you. The stress of such a long-ass reload and the inability to fan that hammer is where most of the stress in Six Shooter came from for me, which is why I loved it so much.

Six Shooter is a FPS by New Zealand developer Trash Can Pete. It takes place on an oil rig three days after a distress call was received (seems like a long time to wait before checking it out…). Arriving on the platform you find the crew dead and in their place some horrific inky-black monsters. Perhaps the tortured souls of countless dead dinosaurs have come back to haunt them.

Armed with nothing but a, you guessed it, Six Shooter, you make your way through the oil rig to find out what happened. While you don’t need to worry about ammo running dry, the real issue is simply operating the gun. A nice snake-leather handle does little when it comes to fighting off eldritch horrors (or whatever the hell these things are), as reloading is painfully slow, and the time it takes to re-cocking the hammer is brutal as well. Kind of reminded me of the first few levels in Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

It is fairly glitchy, and lacks a few important settings. But overall Six Shooter was a pretty cool little FPS horror. You can download it for free on itch.io by clicking here
