Kevin Tancharoen’s story is a pretty awesome one. A hardcore fan of the video game series Mortal Kombat, Tancharoen wanted to show Warners Bros. that he was the guy to reboot the film franchise.
And so he took matters into his own hands and made a short film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which so impressed the company that they funded the nine-part web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, based on the short. They also recently granted his wish, tapping him to direct the feature film he set out to show them he was the guy to make.
Hot on the heels of the premiere of the second season of the web series, on September 26, Tancharoen talked Mortal Kombat with SuperHeroHype, revealing a couple tidbits about the progress of the reboot. “We’re still pushing through on that,” he told the site. “The script is in a good place, we’re just kind of figuring out the budget and locations and that whole process is where we’re at.”
He was asked whether the film would continue the story from the web series or be its own standalone tale, to which Tancharoen had this to say:
“I think everyone’s intention is to start fresh because we want Legacy to live on its own possibly for multiple seasons, and when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it’s been around for 20+ years. We’re going to take the mythology and add another layer on it so it can live on for another 20 years, or more! I think this is a unique opportunity to set that ground work.”
So awesome to see a fan getting to live out the dream, and play around within a world he loves. Not the way things typically work in Hollywood, to say the least!
