The riveting new flick Prisoners (review) owned the box office this past weekend, but the big question is: Did the space convict Riddick and the latest trip to the Further keep up?
According to Deadline, Prisoners (playing in 3,260 theaters) saw a $7M opening Friday and then went up +28% to $9M Saturday for a decent $21.4M domestic weekend. Insidious Chapter 2 stayed relatively strong, earning $4.6M Friday and $6.3M Saturday for a weekend total of $14.2M, bringing it to $50.5M thus far and the number 2 spot at the box office. In its third week Riddick came in 8th at the box office, taking in $37M gross. In 9th place, believe it or not, was The Wizard of OZ in IMAX 3D, which pulled in $2.8M. Not bad for a flick made in 1939!
Not a bad haul, and good to see genre flicks doing really well. On the horizon are Gravity, Machete Kills, Oldboy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Carrie.
