Steamy, Forgotten Margot Robbie Thriller Climbs Netflix Charts: “I’m glad it’s finally getting the attention it deserves”
There was a period of time when every movie had this sort of grim, David Fincher-esque feel to it. No doubt, especially apropos of PG-13, wide-release fare, that had much to do with the Harry Potter movies, mainly the last four directed by David Yates. As evil took hold, a colorful world drained of life, technicolor replaced by a blue and gray overlay to easily signal “Things aren’t going well.”
If you have ever wondered what that same style might look like applied to the Tarzan mythos, first created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, I have got news for you. The same David Yates’ 2016 feature, The Legend of Tarzan, is swinging up the Netflix charts, dominating a week of new releases despite having been a box office disappointment when released.
Check out a trailer and synopsis below:
Per Netflix: Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.
Undoubtedly, the sudden surge in popularity is attributable to Margot Robbie’s co-starring role. Interest spiked this past week when Oscar nominations were released, and many film pundits questioned the exclusion of Robbie for her lead role in Barbie. No matter the merits, Robbie is on everyone’s mind, and The Legend of Tarzan on Netflix is as good an opportunity as any to see Robbie in some expensive studio fare before she really made it big. Plus, it’s got a shirtless Alexander Skarsgård throughout its duration. That’s worth a Netflix sub alone, right?
At the time of release, several critics contended this new Tarzan was a little too grim—and a little too white saviory—to work in the current theatrical landscape. Naturally, it’s inspired a bit of discourse online as more and more audiences flock to the blockbuster on Netflix.
Check out what fans are saying below:
Expectedly, the reactions have been mixed. Chances of a sequel are slim to none, though everything has its audience, and I for one am happy for all the The Legend of Tarzan fans out there finally getting their due.
