The Perfect Valentine’s Day Movie Is Now Streaming On Max

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, so naturally, Ari Aster’s Hereditary follow-up Midsommar is charting on Max. Aster has famously described Midsommar as “a breakup movie dressed in the clothes of a folk horror film,” finding inspiration after enduring a rough breakup of his own. That raw honesty no doubt accounts for why Midsommar endures years after release. Before the folk horror even starts in earnest, it’s painfully real for anyone who’s ever been in a less-than-stellar relationship before. Forgotten birthdays? Check. Conspicuous resentment? Check. Reluctant invitations? Oof, double-check.

Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Max: A couple’s trip to Sweden devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

As with Beau is Afraid, Aster has proven himself to be a singular kind of genre filmmaker. Granted, there’s a conversation worth having around which filmmakers are given the liberty to be as brazenly unconventional as Aster is. But beyond that inquiry, Midsommar was exactly the opposite of what Hereditary fans might have expected. It was brighter, funnier, and much more patient. Where it parallels is in its exceptional lead performance. Matching Toni Collette’s Hereditary work at every turn, Florence Pugh is simply impossible to turn away from. Dani isn’t an easy character to play, and Pugh captures both her intelligence and vulnerability, especially as the travelers ingratiate themselves into the cult more and more.

Fans online have been having a blast with Midsommar on Max, whether it’s their first time viewing it or another of (like me) a dozen rewatches. Check out what they’ve had to say about it here:

Why not treat (surreptitiously threaten) your partner with a romantic Midsommar screening this week? Grab some popcorn, light your A24 incense temple, and get cozy.
