Director Mike Flanagan Recommends Mysterious Free-To-Stream Thriller: “This is a gem, and you won’t be sorry”
In addition to being a purveyor of quality genre content, Mike Flanagan is also an encyclopedia of cinematic suggestions. The celebrated director has previously turned us on to so many off-the-beaten-path indie gems. So, we’re back with another recommendation from his Rotten Tomatoes binge guide today. More specifically, I’m talking about Freaks (2018).
Flanagan is an outspoken fan of Freaks, praising the directors for doing a lot with a little. “This movie came completely out of nowhere for me and knocked me down,” Says Flanagan. “Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have crafted a dark sci-fi film that gives Marvel a run for its money. I mean that literally; this film probably had less in its entire budget than a typical Marvel movie spends on snacks. This is a thrilling, dark, scary, and entirely human twist on — well, I’ll let you discover that for yourself. This is a gem, and you won’t be sorry you gave it your time.”
If Flanagan’s endorsement has enticed you to check the flick out, head over to Tubi (where you can find Freaks streaming free with ads as of the publication of this post).

The setup is as follows: Kept locked inside the house by her father, 7-year-old Chloe lives in fear and fascination of the outside world. It’s a place where Abnormals are a constant threat — or so she believes. But when a mysterious stranger offers her a glimpse of what’s really happening, Chloe soon learns that the truth isn’t so simple — but the danger is very real.
