Is Will Smith going to be reprising his role of Captain Steven Hiller for the upcoming sequel to Independence Day, or is he not? This is the question that’s been hanging in the balance for what seems like forever now.
Not only are we no closer to finding an answer, but it seems that even the director of the film is as clueless as we are!
Roland Emmerich was interviewed by Indiewire today, who asked him point blank if Smith would be starring in the film. Though he didn’t exactly answer the question, he told the site that there are two versions of the script that have been written: one with Smith’s character in it and the other without him. He went on to say that the script by Jamie Vanderbilt is “looking good,” though he didn’t specify which version he was referring to.
While the initial plan was to split ID Forever into two-parts, Emmerich said that the story will be told in one film, rather than two. “I thought about spending four years of my life on one movie, and I didn’t want to turn into something from the movie,” said Emmerich. “It’s a movie about aliens; I don’t want to turn into an alien.”
Both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are supposedly going to be returning for the film, and no plot details have yet been revealed.
The release is currently set for July 3, 2015. Mark your calendars!
