‘Parks and Recreation’ Star Almost Auditioned for Pennywise the Clown: “I was embarrassed!”

IT

Perhaps best known for her scene-stealing role on NBC’s Park and Recreation, comedian Jenny Slate also has an impressive resume of roles in movies like Everything Everywhere All At OnceVenom, and Hotel Artemis. However, in her new Amazon Prime stand-up special Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional, she revealed her previous agents took her on-screen versatility just a little bit too far.

During the special, Slate shares that she received an email to audition for It (2017). While that sounds cool on paper, the role she was invited to read for was Pennywise the Clown. That’s right. The powers that be skipped over the adult version of Beverly Marsh, or even a parent to one of the kids, to arrive at the villainous clown.

Our girl Jenny was understandably upset by this email to play an evil entity who terrorizes a group of kids in Andy Muschietti’s remake. It eventually led Slate to realize she deserved better agents. When The Hollywood Reporter asked her about the incident, she said

“I remember getting the email, and I was embarrassed! And, as the years went by, I felt angry. The people who represent you shouldn’t just be pushing you along. They should be encouraging you and considering you specifically. Maybe it was a careless mistake? But it wasn’t even an offer! (Laughs.) That’s what’s so sad. It would’ve been cool if they were like, “We have a fully formed vision and it’s you!” What I assumed they were thinking was, “Let’s see if this idiot bites.” -via The Hollywood Reporter

We’re happy Jenny Slate found new agents that have assisted her in getting roles actually suited for her. We’re especially looking forward to catching her in the upcoming star-studded sci-fi film The Electric State.

Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional is now available on Prime Video.
