AFM 2013: Motivational Growth Finds a HomeThis year’s American Film Market is crawling across the finish line, and the news is still coming in. Next up is word that Don Thacker’s flick Motivational Growth (review) has been nabbed by Indiecan Entertainment for Canadian distro. Read on for details.

From the Press Release
Fresh from its award-winning Canadian premiere at Toronto After Dark, Don Thacker’s surreal genre film Motivational Growth has been acquired for distribution in Canada by Indiecan Entertainment. The company is eying a multi-platform release in 2014.

In Motivational Growth, Ian Foliver (Adrian DiGiovanni), a depressed and reclusive man in his 30s, finds himself taking advice from a growth in his bathroom after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold (Re-Animator star Jeffrey Combs), a smooth-talking fungus born of the filth in a neglected bathroom, works to help Ian clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle. The Mold has big plans for Ian, but they may not be as innocent as they seem. A labyrinthine narrative follows, full of colorfully-drawn characters and gruesome body horror. “The Mold knows, Jack. The Mold knows.”

The deal was negotiated by CEO Avi Federgreen and Acquisitions Exec Justin McConnell on behalf of Indiecan Entertainment and Circus Road Films CEO Glen Reynolds on behalf of director Don Thacker.

“I am terrifically excited to be working with Avi and Justin for the Canadian release of Motivational Growth. Indiecan absolutely understands the unique and sometimes challenging lens through which the story is told, and I can’t imagine a better team to get it out there. They get it. That makes me excited,” stated director Don Thacker of the sale.

Indiecan rep Justin McConnell adds: “Motivational Growth is a film as twisted with the tongue as it is with the narrative and comes from an original new voice in the genre. I fell in love with the picture the moment I first saw it and can’t wait to help it find the audience it deserves.”

Avi Federgreen, CEO of Indiecan Entertainment, shares this view, stating, “Don has done a masterful job with Motivational Growth. It’s not hard to see why the film has received huge festival acclaim around the world! The film is a great addition to Indiecan’s growing arsenal of great genre titles, and I can’t wait to introduce Canadian audiences to Don Thacker and The Mold.”

Motivational Growth was produced by Imagos Films over twenty-eight days in a warehouse-made-soundstage above a paper binding plant in the dead of winter. With a talented, small, and nimble crew; a wholly wild 360-degree set; inspired local cast; and the legendary Jeffrey Combs, Motivational Growth was hewn from the indie spirit. This marks director Don Thacker’s feature film debut and sets him on the path to a prolific future, with his next project already in the works.

In the meantime, you can keep up-to-date with the film on the official Motivational Growth website, ‘like’ the Motivational Growth Facebook page, and follow @MotGrowth on Twitter.
