In 1976, three years after the release of William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, director Richard Donner’s The Omen came to theaters and unleashed holy terror. Now, we’re getting The First Omen, a prequel from 20th Century Studios examining a conspiracy surrounding a young woman and the Antichrist. Yes, we may just learn how Damian was precisely born of a jackal.

In The First Omen:

When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

Legacy sequels, requels, and remakes have a shaky trajectory, especially after the release of David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer last year. The trailer for The First Omen looks promising, so fingers crossed for a new piece of religious horror that’ll have us saying our prayers at night.

Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga, and Ralph Ineson star in the film with Charles Dance and Bill Nighy. Arkasha Stevenson directs the film with a script she co-wrote with Keith Thomas (director of Firestarter and The Vigil). Their characters are based on creations by David Seltzer, writer of the original 1976 film.

The First Omen comes exclusively to theaters on April 5, 2024.
