Before Longlegs, Osgood Perkins terrified audiences with his feature film debut The Blackcoat’s Daughter. Many of us have being championing the film since its release, and one such champion is horror auteur Mike Flanagan. The director has delivered a number of hits for Netflix and is now working on multiple projects with Prime Video. Somehow the celebrated creator still finds time to champion under appreciated films like The Blackcoat’s Daughter. The film was a moderate box office success for A24 when it was released. But it seems to have been largely forgotten since it bowed in 2017.

The setup is as follows:

During the dead of winter, a troubled young woman (Emma Roberts) embarks on a mysterious journey to an isolated prep school where two stranded students (Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Boynton) face a sinister threat from an unseen evil force.

In his stuck-at-home binge guide for Rotten Tomatoes, Flanagan had the following to say of the film: “Oz Perkins’ chilling and meditative puzzler is one of my favorites. Great performances across the board, what appears at first to be a story about girls encountering a supernatural force when left behind at their boarding school is revealed to be something even deeper by the end. I love this movie for a lot of reasons, but particularly because of how it touches on an unexplored facet of possession stories.”

If that enthusiastic recommendation has you keen to seek out The Blackcoat’s Daughter, you’re in luck. The flick is available to stream on Max as of the publication of this post.
