One of the Most Disturbing Movies Ever Made is Now Streaming for Free
If you’re in the mood for a really scary movie, you can now check out one of the most disturbing movies of all time for free online. Gerald Kargl’s 1983 masterpiece Angst (Fear) is now available to stream on Tubi.
Loosely based on real mass murder Werner Kniesek, Angst was controversial when first released, drawing ire for its extreme depictions of violence, briefly being banned in parts of Europe and struggling to get a domestic distribution until early this century. Angst is the real deal, and if you haven’t yet, you can now check it out for yourself.
Per Tubi: Having spent a decade of his life behind bars, a sadistic murderer is finally released from prison and begins to terrorize a family.
Angst has been a perennial influence on filmmaker Gasper Noé s (Climax, Irréversible) and remains as challenging a watch as ever. There’s a transgressive normalcy to the violence depicted within, an austere attempt at pushing boundaries whenever possible. Think Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (also on Tubi) in terms of detachment, but a hair more unsettling.
While it doesn’t make for especially pleasant viewing, and it won’t be for everyone, it remains a landmark achievement in the genre. Horror doesn’t need to be safe, and while there might be a guiding audience presumption that it needs to be—evil is punished, the good guy wins—some movies are more matter-of-fact with their assessment of the world. Angst consciously pushes buttons, making for a deeply unsettling experience unlike anything you might have seen before. Growing up, I thought this movie was cursed. I can’t wait to check it out again on Tubi.

What do you think? Have you seen Angst yet? How disturbing was it? If you have seen it, how regularly do you recommend it? I’ve seen it logged a lot more regularly on Letterboxd this past month, so someone is no doubt guiding audiences to it on Tubi. Either way, let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
