‘MaXXXine’ Trailer: Ti West’s Raunchy ‘X’ Trilogy Goes for the Money Shot
It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the official trailer for A24 and Ti West’s MaXXXine is here. The highly anticipated final(?) film in West’s trilogy (preceded by X and Pearl) brings the titular wannabe movie star to Hollywood. But her past may be catching up with her as a series of brutal deaths unfolds across Los Angeles.
MaXXXine takes place in 1980s Hollywood where “adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”
Watch the new trailer:
The Night Stalker was a real serial killer who terrorized Los Angeles from June 1984 until August 1985. His real name was Richard Ramirez, and he raped and killed at least 13 people during his almost-year-long crime spree. He even murdered a woman named Maxine Zazzara and her husband in March 1985. That small fact may just be a weird coincidence but in the world West is constructing, it could be a clue.
If West is in fact pulling inspiration from an actual monster who put fear into the hearts of every LA resident for two summers, it’ll be fascinating to see how he folds Ramirez into it all. However, Ramirez didn’t specifically hunt down Hollywood starlets, so maybe this is an entirely different killer altogether.
From the red lights and close-ups of black leather gloves, MaXXXine seems to be leaning into the giallo and noir vibes, with dashes of found footage as brief shots in grainy 4:3 are reminiscent of VHS footage. If this becomes some sort of hybrid found footage film, my anticipation for the film will shoot through the roof.
Mia Goth, of course, returns as the titular Maxine. She stars alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, as well as Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon.
MaXXXine comes exclusively to theaters on July 5, 2024.
