John Carpenter has never been one to hold back his feelings and that proved to once again be the case when he sat down with Vulture to discuss his storied career. During the exchange, Carpenter spoke about his work on Village of the Damned and elaborated as to why it’s a film he isn’t especially fond of.

The setup for Village of the Damned is as follows:

Ten months after the small California town of Midwich was struck by a mysterious event during which everyone in the village fell unconscious at once, 10 local women give birth on the same day. As the unsettlingly calm and unemotional children grow at an abnormally fast rate, it becomes clear that they can read adults’ minds and force people to harm themselves. Local doctor Alan Chaffee (Christopher Reeve) and federal agent Susan Verner (Kirstie Alley) must team up to battle the alien children.

The 1995 remake got a lukewarm response from fans and critics alike. As it turns out, Carpenter isn’t overly taken with the project himself. When Vulture asked about projects that didn’t catch on that he’s still proud of, the director answered the prompt but then shifted gears to speak to his apparent disdain for Village of the Damned.

His full reply reads:

“Several, I guess [laughs]. That’s the story of my career. The Thing was a big bomb and I think that’s one of my best films. I’m really not passionate about Village of the Damned. I was getting rid of a contractual assignment, although I will say that it has a very good performance from Christopher Reeve, so there’s some value in it.”
