The New Horror Movie That Got Lionsgate Studios Banned on TikTok

the strangers: chapter 1

The promotional effort for the first of Renny Harlin’s rebooted The Strangers trilogy, The Strangers: Chapter 1,” is in full swing. The movie’s release isn’t far off, and if the studio is to be believed, we’ll have all three in theaters before January 2025. That’s a lot of The Strangers, everyone’s favorite masked baddies who core hook is the randomness of their many killings. Why were Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman targeted in the original?

Simply because they were home. The killers, known to fans as Man in the Mask, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl, have been up to some other shenanigans as well, though their most recent stint at drumming up excitement was met with a swift, though temporary, Tik-Tok ban for being too disturbing.

In the now-deleted live stream, the titular strangers, namely The Man in the Mask, was seen holding up a sign that read, “Is Tamara home?” Not much else is known about the stream since shortly after starting, TikTok removed the video with the statement, “We do not allow showing or promoting dangerous activities and challenges. This includes dares, games, tricks, inappropriate use of dangerous tools, eating substances that are harmful to one’s health, or similar activities that may lead to significant physical harm.”

Lionsgate’s account still features plenty of advertisements for the forthcoming The Strangers: Chapter 1, including several popular meme formats and, in a weirdly charming turn, some crossover with the Twilight franchise. Other videos from the page feature stills from the movie and The Strangers: Chapter 1’s full-length trailer in all its compressed, portrait-mode glory.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 premiered last week, and social media reactions have been mixed. In fairness, it’s an odd choice for a series to bankroll a franchise for, but we’ll know definitively when the movie releases this weekend.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to The Strangers: Chapter 1? And, which of the two previous movies is your favorite? I hate to say it, but I’m a Prey at Night stan all the way. Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
