Teens Discover Macabre Surprise on Fishing Trip: “…hooked a sock that was attached to some human remains” [Horror IRL]
A group of teenagers in Rankin County, Mississippi went out on a fishing excursion and were shocked to reel in a human leg on the other end of their line.
The teens were not supposed to be fishing in the retention pond, but authorities had far greater concerns when they got wind of the shocking discovery.
Det. Sean Haddakin with the Flowood Police Department told ABC affiliate WAPT that authorities aren’t yet certain how long the leg has been in the pond. He also revealed that further searching of the body of water has led to the discovery of additional human remains.
While the circumstances might seem suspicious to some, Haddakin says it is too early to say if foul play is involved. Haddakin further reported that the remains have yet to be identified, saying: “As part of this investigating, we are seeing all the missing persons reports from this area and broadening it out from there. We need to identify male, female — we don’t have any of that information at this time.”
Brett Ishee of Rankin County Emergency Operations Center provided additional context on how the limb was discovered, offering the following statement: “Kind of a needle in a haystack. They were out fishing and hooked a sock that was attached to some human remains, and that’s how this whole thing got started.”
The pond is known to be home to alligators, meaning there are several possible explanations as to how the remains wound up at the bottom of the body of water. It is plausible that someone fell in and was eaten by the pond’s aquatic life. It is also possible the remains were deposited there in an attempt to get rid of evidence.
All remains recovered from the retention pond have been sent to the state crime lab and the county coroner’s office for further testing.
