Stephen King Praises Prime Video’s Latest Blockbuster Thriller: “Say no more”
All the Family Guy I watched in middle school has polluted my mind. Now, whenever I hear Road House, I can’t help but say it in Peter Griffin’s distinct cadence. Road House. Followed by a swift kick or whatever it is Griffin does. Lucky for both Peter and any Road House fans out there, Prime Video recently released their Road House, a remake of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 original of the same name.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars in a role originally popularized by the late Patrick Swayze (or Johnathon Schaech if you’re a fan of the critically maligned 2006 sequel). The latest Road House, which premiered at this year’s SXSW festival, wasn’t quite a critical hit, either, but that hasn’t stopped Stephen King from singing its praises online.
Per Prime Video: In this adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic, ex-UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.
It’s Night Swim all over again, and I love Stephen King for it. While his tweet was brief, he does hit all the beats needed to convince an audience to check out Road House on Prime Video. Stephen King is a Jake Gyllenhaal stan, and we love to see it. While he might draw the ire of Swifties everywhere, Gyllenhaal is one of just a few A-listers willing to get certifiably weird when the role calls for it. Okja? Nightcrawler? Dan Stevens is getting up there, and if we’re lucky, maybe we’ll one day see them both go toe-to-toe in a battle of cinematic weirdness.
While Stephen King is a fan of Doug Liman’s (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) Road House, general audiences haven’t been more mixed. Check out some choice fan reactions below:
What do you think? Do you plan to check out Road House on Stephen King’s recommendation? What other titles are worth catching on Prime Video? If you liked Road House, you’re in luck, too. Prime Video has announced a sequel. Let me know your thoughts over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
