A24’s Record-Breaking Thriller is Now the Most-Watched Movie on Amazon
Alex Garland’s latest A24 film Civil War is out now on digital following a successful theatrical run ($113.6 million global earnings at the box office), an embarrassing AI controversy (please use real artists, for the love of God), and thousands of tweets sharing opinions about a British man’s take on American politics. No matter where you fall on the Civil War scale, there’s no denying its power as a piece of entertainment, especially as it tops the charts on Amazon.
Read the full synopsis below:
From filmmaker Alex Garland comes a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.
Garland’s latest features a stacked cast, including Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman. Dunst especially turns out a career-defining performance as veteran conflict photographer Lee Smith. She’s tough and stoic, but still deeply affected by what’s happened over the years of her career. Her dynamic with Spaeny’s Jessie is fascinating as we watch the new and old guard come together in the face of harrowing violence.
That violence has been met with split reactions as some viewers think the film is too measured in its politics as Garland never explains why exactly the United States is engaging in a civil war. It’s kept incredibly ambiguous, which again, split audiences with some not thinking details are necessary for the film’s impact, while others see it as Garland refusing to take sides.
In his review from the film’s world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, Dread Central’s Drew Tinnin wrote, “Shockingly, Alex Garland’s polarizing new film offers up a surprising level of catharsis hidden inside a riveting, action-heavy war movie.”
