This Steamy Denzel Washington Thriller is Finally on HBO’s Max: “Not a one normal moment in it”

Denzel Washington

If you’re looking for an underrated gem to catch this week, why not check out Russell Mulcahy’s Ricochet on HBO’s streaming service, Max? The Denzel Washington vehicle, first released in 1991, is one of the famed actor’s best. Behind-the-scenes lore runs deep, whether it’s a returning Ellen Trainor from Die Hard or its roots, originally, as a Dirty Harry sequel.

The early 1990s just hit differently, and this film ricochets off the best of them. Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Max: Denzel Washington stars as an assistant D.A. who must face off against an ex-con he put away who is out of prison–and out for revenge.

At the time of release, Ricochet received strong reviews from both critics and audiences. While test screenings resulted in cuts to the movie’s more violent scenes, it remains one of Denzel Washington’s grittier leading roles. Nick Styles is one of the actor’s coolest characters, a prelude of sorts to the kind of work he’d later do in The Equalizer trilogy of films.

Despite some content that’s considerably more graphic than some Washington fans might be expecting, Ricochet is a hoot. It’s simultaneously goofy, weird, ugly, and violent. It ricochets wildly from incredulous scheming to grounded, unsavory violence, and while it may not always be a pleasurable viewing experience, it’s certainly an exciting one.

Fans have been thrilled to see the film streaming on Max. While it doesn’t often rank toward the top among Denzel Washington fans, those who get it, well, get it (mostly). Check out some choice social reactions below:

Is Ricochet good? I think so, but I’m also a certified purveyor of bad cinema. What do you think, though? Where does Ricochet rank among Denzel Washington’s filmography for you? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
