It’s Mike Flanagan’s world and we’re all just living in it. The horror filmmaker presently has two remarkably exciting projects coming down the pipeline, including the recently-announced rebooting of 2023’s poorly received Exorcist: The Believer and the Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck. Flanagan’s filmography is diverse, though among his best are his King adaptations, including Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game.

After decades of inconsistent King adaptations, Flanagan is the rare filmmaker who seems to just get it. It helps that he’s a massive King fan himself. Recently, Flanagan logged Mick Garris’ The Stand, an adaptation of King’s 1978 novel of the same name, on Letterboxd. That means it’s as good a time as any to revisit the miniseries yourself.

Per AppleTV: Earth’s few survivors of a catastrophic epidemic battle a satanic being.

The Stand is one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations. In fact, between Mick Garris and Mike Flanagan, I’m not sure I could pick a favorite when it comes to adapting King’s writing to screen. Both bring a deft touch and profound understanding of the material to every project, elevating even the trickiest parts of King’s text, ensuring they translate well to the filmic form.

On Letterboxd, Mike Flanagan shared how he was recently lucky enough to revisit The Stand on the big screen. It’s a rare opportunity since The Stand first aired on ABC over four nights in 1994. Check out what Flanagan had to say below:

“I’ve just had the privilege of watching this in its entirety – in one sitting on the big screen at the Aero Theatre – sitting next to Mick Garris. This miniseries was a towering event in 1994. I was only a sophomore in High School when it came out, I watched it over four nights as it aired, and it had a major impact on me.”

Flanagan would conclude by writing, “There is much about this miniseries that I loved thirty years ago, and will love always.” You can check out his full written response here. Mike Flanagan’s admiration for the project is evident in his recent body of work. If you’d like to revisit The Stand as well, you can now catch it online on AppleTV.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Stand? Which Mike Flanagan project is your favorite? Which Mick Garris project is your favorite (you’d better say Riding the Bullet)? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
