Master of Horror Guillermo del Toro Says This Netflix Hidden Gem is “Full of ingenuity”

It isn’t often that I stumble across a horror movie I haven’t heard anything about. While I have plenty of cinematic blind spots, I have, at the very least, heard of the movies I know I need to be watching. Yet, every so often, something comes along that I’d never heard of before. Such was the case with Paul Urkijo Alijo’s Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil on Netflix.

It’s a film Guillermo del Toro heartily recommends that I’d never heard of before. Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Netflix: A brutal blacksmith tortures a demon he blames for his misery, unaware a trespassing orphan is about to change everything. Based on Basque folklore.

Guillermo del Toro, the famed director behind films like The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, certainly has the genre bonafides to back up his claims. Additionally, while he’s shared some recommendations before, he does so less often than, say, Stephen King. It signals Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil as the real deal.

The Basque-language horror film is a rare one, largely because there isn’t much Basque-language horror out there. The film is steeped in Basque folklore, principally adapting The Smith and the Devil tale. It’s as much a window into ancient folktales as it is a compelling and frightening horror film. Guillermo del Toro said as much when he wrote that the film was “full of great moments.” Check out his tweet below:

Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil joins the legion of other remarkable folk horror films available to stream on Netflix, including Apostle and Paco Plaza’s The Ritual. The streamer is full of hidden horror gems, plenty of which are worth seeking out.

What do you think? Any plans to check out Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil on Netflix? Which Guillermo del Toro film is your favorite? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
