Stephen King is back with a monstrous, mega-sized new horror/thriller recommendation on Netflix. It seems that the Master of Horror initially had his doubts about the French creature feature but was convinced to actually hit play after witnessing the amount of love and buzz the title was receiving across Twitter.

The film at hand is a shark movie unlike any other you’re likely to encounter this year. And he’s right about one thing: the last half hour of this thrill ride is totally outrageous and completely unmissable horror cinema.

The Netflix film Stephen King is backing today is the newly released sharksploitation sensation Under Paris. This monster movie has been dominating the Netflix film charts for over a week now, at one point landing the top stop spot both globally and in the United States. As of today, the film is still the top-charting thriller/horror film on the streaming platform, and that’s nothing short of impressive.

In the film, per Netflix, “In order to save Paris from an international bloodbath, a grieving scientist is forced to face her tragic past when a giant shark appears in the Seine.”

Sure, it’s a little outrageous to imagine a gigantic shark somehow haunting the depths of the Parisian Seine, but the filmmakers behind this title know exactly how to handle the material, and it’s a blast from start to finish. Filmmaker Xavier Gens helmed Under Paris, a script he wrote alongside the talents of Maud Heywang and Yannick Dahan. Horror fans definitely know Gens from his directorial debut Frontier(s), a tentpole from the era of New French Extremity cinema. His other films, Mayhem! and Cold Skin are also unmissable bouts of genre movie magic.

Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Anaïs Parello, and Léa Léviant star in Under Paris, which is streaming right now.
