Critics Are Saying They Have Now Seen the Scariest Movie of the Year
Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs was already my most-anticipated horror movie of the year. Now that the review embargo has lifted, my expectations have shot through the roof. Mary Beth McAndrews awarded Longlegs a perfect score, writing, “Longlegs horrifically embodies the idea of gazing into a deep dark abyss, full of nothing but despair.”
The film follows an FBI agent (Maika Monroe) in pursuit of a serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who finds herself confronted with a series of occult clues she must solve to end his killing spree. Longlegs will be released in theaters on July 12 courtesy of Neon, so to get hyped, check out what other critics have been saying about what’s destined to be the year’s scariest movie.
Bill Bria of SlashFilm awarded Longlegs a perfect 10 out of 10 score. In his review, he wrote that Longlegs is the “most terrifying horror movie of 2024, a film that gets under your skin and may never get out.”
Katie Rife’s review out of IGN was more mixed, awarding Longlegs a 7/10, sharing how the film was a “Satanic spin on The Silence of the Lambs” while conceding Longlegs “feels like a movie you’ve seen before.”
Matt Donato was more positive in his review at Inverse. There, he wrote, “Longlegs is Perkins’ trademark aesthetic at max volume, lingering in your thoughts, under your skin, and in the pit of your stomach well after it’s over,” and awarded the film a score of 4 out of 5.
And, finally, EJ Moreno’s video review for Flicking Myth might be the most positive of the bunch. He hailed Longlegs as “the pure horror experience we’ve been waiting for. It’s easily the scariest film of the decade.”
In fact, among first reactions and published reviews, there isn’t a single negative reaction out there. While not all have hailed Longlegs as a masterpiece, there’s little doubt it will emerge as the buzziest horror movie of the year.
