Guillermo del Toro Praises “Unbelievable, exhilarating” Hidden Gem Now Free to Watch
One of the few remaining joys of social media is hearing about a movie I’d never known existed. Social media is what directed me to The Borderlands and Horror in the High Desert, for instance. Just this week, I saw Guillermo del Toro tweet about Drive.
At first, I thought the famed filmmaker was talking about Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 Drive. Everyone born before 2002 has seen that movie (for better or worse). Instead, del Toro was tweeting about Steve Wang’s Drive, a 1997 thriller that premiered on HBO. The movie looks incredible. Check out a trailer and synopsis below:
Per Tubi: To escape a dangerous squad of hitmen, a bionic gunslinger teams up with a road-weary bystander leading to high-speed chaos.
Drive stars Mark Dacascos, Kadeem Hardison, and the late Brittany Murphy in an early role. Dacascos especially is an action and martial arts staple, having appeared in films like Brotherhood of the Wolf, Only the Strong, and recently, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Last week, Twitter user AndrewMGorham wrote, “Drive is one of the greatest American made martial arts movies! Amazing choreography, fun characters and Dacascos showing what he’s fully capable of!”
Guillermo del Toro, film buff that he is, responded to the tweet sharing his own thoughts. Check out what he had to say below:
I don’t know about you, but I trust Guillermo del Toro more than most. Because of what he’s had to say, Drive has catapulted to the top of my watchlist. Better still? You can catch the film streaming for free on Tubi now. Get on it—I know I’ll be streaming this weekend.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Drive? What other recs of Guillermo del Toro have you been impressed by? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
