Dark and Beautiful Guillermo del Toro Fantasy-Thriller Is Now on Hulu; Don’t Miss It

Guillermo del Toro has the Midas Touch. The Oscar-winning creator knows how to craft tension and establish an atmosphere like few other filmmakers can. Not to mention, his visual style is a delight to behold. Since we know our readers enjoy del Toro’s work as much as we do, we are always quick to share when one of his films hits streaming. On that note, we are pleased to report that Hellboy is now available on Hulu. Hooray! But it likely won’t be there for too long.

This 2004 adaptation features Ron Perlman in the titular role. Selma Blair, Doug Jones, John Hurt, and Rupert Evans costar. In addition to directing, del Toro adapted the screenplay from the Dark Horse comic by Mike Mignola.

Unlike the less-beloved reboot that bowed in 2019, del Toro’s Hellboy was a hit with critics and fans alike. The picture is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes and holds an audience approval score of 66%.

The setup goes like this: At the end of World War II, the Nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the Allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by Allied forces and dubbed “Hellboy” (Perlman). Sixty years later, Hellboy serves as an agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, where he, aided by Abe Sapien (Jones), a merman with psychic powers, and Liz Sherman (Blair), a woman with pyrokinesis, protects America against dark forces.
