Stephen King recently responded to a Twitter prompt asking movie lovers to name their favorite film score. Given King usually marches to the beat of his own drum, it’s not entirely surprising that he replied with an unorthodox choice. With that said, he has a point.

King named The Blair Witch Project as his favorite film score. What makes his pick unexpected is that the film doesn’t have a score. But, like I said, it’s hard to argue with him. As the saying goes, the silence is deafening. That film is immersive, in part, because of the lack of musical accompaniment.

King has long been a champion of The Blair Witch Project. And he’s not alone. Upon release, the film broke box office records, amassed a sizable fanbase, and paved the way for the found footage boom that eventually followed. The picture is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with an approval rating of 86% from critics. And it remains one of the most immersive cinematic experiences in recent memory. No wonder King is such a fan.

The setup goes like this: Found video footage tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who’ve traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale’s veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.
