Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of all time. He has written countless books, short stories, novellas, and more. His work has been adapted more than any other living writer, and it’s easy to see why. He has a great imagination and a gift for storytelling. With that said, not all of King’s literary efforts function on all four cylinders. There’s one title in particular the author looks back on and shudders. I’m talking about the 1987 tome The Tommyknockers.

In 2014, the author sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss his illustrious career. When the conversation turned to his struggles with cocaine, the outlet asked if addiction took a toll on his literary output. The author’s response was surprisingly candid.

“Yeah, it did. I mean, The Tommyknockers is an awful book,” King began. “That was the last one I wrote before I cleaned up my act. And I’ve thought about it a lot lately and said to myself, there’s really a good book in here, underneath all the sort of spurious energy that cocaine provides, and I ought to go back. The book is about 700 pages long, and I’m thinking, there’s probably a good 350-page novel in there.”

There you have it. Stephen King recognizes The Tommyknockers may not be his best work. Not surprisingly, the miniseries adaptation isn’t particularly well regarded either, sitting at a critical approval rating of just 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’re curious, you can check out the trailer in the player below.

The synopsis per Wikipedia reads: While walking in the woods near the small town of Haven, Maine, Roberta “Bobbi” Anderson, a writer of Wild West-themed fiction, stumbles upon a metal object that turns out to be a protrusion of a long-buried alien spacecraft.

While there is no official way to stream or download The Tommyknockers in North America, there is a decent-quality version floating around on YouTube. Take a peek at your own discretion.
