A Witchy Classic Floats Atop HBO’s Max Charts; Sequel Finally Announced

The internet was thrown into a spellbinding tizzy this month when Warner Bros. Pictures announced the return of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic 2. In an era of legacy updates and long-awaited sequels, it’s not terribly surprising news, though the 1998 original, while a cult-classic autumnal favorite now, wasn’t exactly a critical or commercial hit when it was first released. That’s the magic of movies, I guess.

Expectedly, interest in the first Practical Magic has been renewed, and the movie is now sitting pretty at Number 2 on the Max streaming charts for the week!

Per Max: Sibling witches stir up a cauldron of trouble thanks to a family curse in this spellbinding tale.

Blending romance, comedy, and a dash of horror, Practical Magic has endured as a time capsule of the late 1990s. In a piece on the best movies to get into the autumn mood, our own Tyler Doupé wrote, “While this tale of sister witches battling an ancient curse was written off by the majority of critics at the time of release, there is still plenty to appreciate about Practical Magic.” The film is fun, cute, and family-friendly—no wonder it’s topping the Max charts.

The news is especially interesting given Warner Bros. recent decisions, including shelving some already finished movies, canceling others, and forcing once-theatrical releases to premiere exclusively on Max. There’s no telling whether Practical Magic 2 will hit theaters or go the Hocus Pocus 2 route and premiere on streaming yet.

Still, fans have been loving the nostalgic vibe, the balance of different tones and genres, and the promise of a new entry in Practical Magic’s expanding universe. Check out some choice social media reactions about the Max hit below:
