A Critically Panned Stephen King Thriller That Fans Enjoy Is Now Free-to-Stream

Stephen King

Stephen King has been on a hot streak for decades. He’s always got a project in development. With so many of the author’s books and short stories getting the screen treatment, there are bound to be a few that don’t quite land. A title that falls into that very category recently bowed on Pluto. I’m talking about Thinner. The film is an adaptation of the King novel of the same name but was released under the pen name Richard Bachman.

I recall checking out Thinner on VHS in the ‘90s. To the best of my recollection, the flick is not terrible. But it’s not particularly memorable, either. If memory serves correctly, director and co-writer Tom Holland had some good ideas, but things never fully congeal. However, I haven’t seen it since then, so I’d need to pay the film a repeat visit to provide any additional insight.

That said, the movie has received a revaluation over the years, and some consider it a classic 90s King horror staple. Thinner stars Robert John Burke, Joe Mantegna, Lucinda Jenney, Bethany Joy Lenz, Time Winters, and Michael Constantine. Holland co-wrote the screenplay with Beetlejuice scribe Michael McDowell.

For anyone unfamiliar: The film follows Billy Halleck (Burke), an obese lawyer who accidentally hits a Gypsy with his car after his wife distracts him. Given Halleck’s influence in town and prejudice against Gypsies, he manages to brush the incident under the rug with some unethical legal help from his associates. However, the victim’s father, Tadzu Lempke (Constantine), places a curse on the heavyset man, and he starts to lose weight at an alarming rate, which is followed by other macabre events.
