This Ominious Stephen King Netflix Movie Is One of Donald Sutherland’s Final Roles

Donald Sutherland

Donald Sutherland was a cinematic icon. Full stop. His passing marks the end of a truly impressive legacy. The actor appeared in a number of classic films inside and outside the genre space. Horror fans likely remember him from Don’t Look Now, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Fran Rubel Kuzui’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But I’m not here to discuss any of the aforementioned titles. Instead, I am shining the spotlight on an overlooked Stephen King adaptation featuring the late actor. I’m talking about Mr. Harrigan’s Phone.

If you haven’t heard of the film, you’re not alone. It flew under the radar upon release and remains somewhat under-seen. That may have to do with the way Netflix marketed the picture. The streamer leaned into King’s horror pedigree when they were promoting the flick. But as our Chad Collins puts it, the film “…certainly has some horror elements—namely our protagonist communicating with the dead—but the scares themselves are peripheral to what is otherwise a domestic drama. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone tackles bullying, aging, guilt, and grief considerably more than it does conventional scare tactics.”

If Chad’s recommendation has you keen to seek out the picture, head over to Netflix and give it a watch.

For anyone unfamiliar with the setup, the flick plays out like this: Craig, a young boy, befriends the elderly billionaire John Harrigan (Sutherland). Craig then gives him a mobile phone. However, when the man dies, Craig discovers he can communicate with his friend from the grave.

That’s all we have for you. Stay tuned to the site in the coming days for more updates on which films are streaming and where to find them. Also, be sure to follow @DreadCentral on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter so you never miss an update.
