This Denzel Washington Movie Based On Shocking Real Crime Is Now on Prime Video; Don’t Miss It

Prime Video The Hurricane Denzel Washington

True crime enthusiasts take note. A Denzel Washington film based on a tragic miscarriage of justice is now available to stream via Prime Video. I’m talking about the award-winning film The Hurricane. This 1999 feature chronicles the plight of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a middleweight boxer wrongfully convicted of murder.

Denzel Washington took home a Golden Globe award for ‘best performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ for his performance as the titular character. The Academy also gave Washington a nod for his impressive turn. However, Roberto Benigni ultimately took home the Oscar statue for his enthusiastic showing in Life is Beautiful.

Not surprisingly, the film is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critical approval rating of 83% and an audience score of 87%.

Norman Jewison directed The Hurricane from a script penned by Armyan Bernstein and Dan Gordon. The pair adapted the screenplay from Carter’s memoir, which he wrote with Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton.

In addition to Washington, the film stars Vicellous Shannon, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber, John Hannah, and Dan Hedaya.

If you’re not familiar with the setup of the film, it goes like this: Denzel Washington is Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a man whose dreams of winning the middleweight boxing title were destroyed when he was arrested along with another man for the murders of 3 people in a New Jersey bar. Wrongfully accused, Carter and John Artis were sentenced to 3 life terms in prison.
