This Denzel Washington Thriller On HBO’s Max Is One of His Best; Don’t Miss It

One day, Denzel Washington is going to make a bonafide horror movie. Fallen is good, and The Book of Eli is a guilty pleasure, though, unlike most actors, Washington has skirted around the horror periphery better than most, never really diving in. Imagine a Washington-led A24 horror movie?

Until then, his genre-adjacent properties are the best we’ve got, though luckily, one of his best is streaming for free. Carl Franklin’s criminally underrated Out of Time is now streaming on Max. Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Max: Small-town sheriff Denzel Washington is framed for murder and more after he uses confiscated drug money to help a cancer-stricken lover.

Denzel Washington and Carl Franklin previously collaborated on 1995’s Devil in a Blue Dress, one of Washington’s best. In Out of Time, he’s supported by Eva Mendes and Sanaa Lathan, both of whom are up to the task. It’s seedy, thrilling, and a ton of fun.

While it looks like many direct-to-video thrillers released in the early 2000s, Denzel Washington’s innate star power elevates even its more incredulous moments. After a rocky start at the turn of the century, it represents Washington’s slow yet remarkable return to critics’ good graces. It’s a lot better than The Siege, that’s all I’m saying.

Out of Time is a favorite among Denzel Washington fans, too. For that era, my money has to go to Man on Fire (it was one of the first DVDs I owned), but I love Out of Time. The film recently turned 20, so if you haven’t had a chance to check it out, consider this my formal request that you do so. It’s film noir bliss.
