The Terrifying Story of the Ibadan Forest of Horror

Ibadan Forest of Horror

Some true crime cases reappear in the public consciousness with the regularity of the seasonal flu. The Ibadan Forest of Horror is presently captivating (and horrifying) internet users across the globe largely because it remains one of the most inexplicable and frightening discoveries of the century. Be warned, some of the forthcoming content is incredibly disturbing.

On March 22, 2014, a group of taxi drivers stumbled upon a horrifying sight in the Soka Forest in Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria. The drivers had been operating as an impromptu search party after another driver in the area went missing. There, they found The Ibadan House of Horror, as it was soon colloquially called. Inside were some of the century’s most gruesome and frightening discoveries.

When authorities arrived, 23 living survivors were rescued from the building. In and around the area, authorities also discovered severed body parts, decomposing bodies, and artifacts belonging to several missing persons. The local assumption was that the site was a dumping ground for a group of ritualists, some affiliated with affluent Nigerians, who used human flesh for rituals.

The discovery prompted riots as hundreds of local residents swarmed the building, desperate to get inside and rescue who they could. According to a BBC News report, the riots led to several injuries. Residents suspected black magic rituals on account of the skeletons and corpses found inside. Also according to the BBC, dozens of malnourished persons were found wandering around the perimeter of the building with at least 15 more found shackled inside.

The building has since been demolished and developed into the Oyo State Comprehensive Model School. With no clear answers as to what exactly happened in the building, locals have been left to speculate about the worst possibilities. Resultantly, the Ibadan Forest of Horror endures as one of the most frightening stories of the century. With occult links, government corruption, and the sheer gruesomeness of the sight, it’s no wonder why.
